Is the Queen coming for tea?

Posted by Alex Butler on

With the jubilee fast approaching it's time to get ready in case Lizzie nips round for a brew! This stripy cosy will add just the right amount of party and patriotism to your table!

It's a super simple, made-to-measure pattern so will fit you teapot whether it's tall and thin or short and stout!

We used Stylecraft Special chunky in red, white and blue (click here to buy) but any chunky will do, and a 6m hook. You could even dress up the top with some pom poms or a crown. Our Liz will be right chuffed!

READ BEFORE YOU START

You must measure your teapot before you start. Measure height (A) from lid handle to bottom rim and width (B) from spout to handle around the fattest part. Ours it’s a pretty standard 4-cup teapot and the measurements are A:19cm, B:24cm. Our chain was 31 chains long. Write your measurements below.

A:                                                              B:                                                             C:

We changed colours every 2 rows and did not fasten off our yarns in between but twisted them around each other to give a fancy trim at the top.

Keep an eye on your stitch count at each end of a row as the slip stitches can be a bit tricky to see so easy to miss one or two.

Directions

1

Make a chain measuring A then add 2 more chains. Count your chain and write the number above next to C.

Work a slip stitch into the 2nd chain from the hook (missed chain will count as first slip stitch). Work a slip stitch into each of the next 4 chains. Work a half treble crochet into each chain until you reach the final 5 chains. Work a double crochet into the remaining 5 chains. Turn.

2

Chain 1 (does NOT count as first stitch throughout this pattern). WORKING IN THE BACK LOOP ONLY FROM THIS POINT ON work a double crochet into each of the first 5 stitches followed by a half treble crochet into each stitch until you reach the final 5 stitches. Work a slip stitch into the remaining 5 stitches. Turn (change to next colour if working stripes).

3

Chain 1 (does NOT count as first stitch). WORKING IN THE BACK LOOP ONLY work a slip stitch into each of the first 5 stitches followed by a half treble crochet into each stitch until you reach the final 5 stitches. Work a double crochet into each of the remaining 5 stitches. Turn.

4

Repeat rows 2 and 3, finishing on a row 2 until your piece measures B at its widest point.

5

We will now make the hole for the handle.

Chain 1 (does NOT count as first stitch). WORKING IN THE BACK LOOP ONLY work a slip stitch into each of the first 5 stitches. Work a half treble crochet into each of the next 2 stitches. Calculate C-15. Make a chain that number long and then miss that number of stitches on the previous row. You should now have 7 stitches remaining. Work a half treble crochet into each of the next 2 stitches. Work a double crochet into the remaining 5 stitches. Turn.

6

Continue in the pattern, repeating rows 2 and 3 until the pieces either side of the handle gap are the same width.

7

Try on your teapot and place a stitch marker along the final row where the spout starts. Work a slip stitch seam through BOTH SIDES down to the stitch marker. Work slip stitches along only one piece until you reach the bottom of the spout. Finish off joining both sides with a slip stitch seam. Fasten off, sew in ends and get the kettle on!
